Elizabeth has been saving nickels and dimes. So far she has 25 coins. Her total savings is $1.65. Find the number of nickels and the number of dimes in Elizabeth’s savings.
Let the number of dimes = D
Then the number of nickels is 25 - D
So we have this
value of a nickel * number + value of a dime * number = toal value
.05 (25 - D) + .10 (D) = 1.65 simplify
1.25 - .05D + .10D = 1.65
1.25 + .05D = 1.65 subtract 1.25 from both sides
.05D = .40 divide both sides by .05
D = 8 = number of dimes
And 25 - 8 = 17 nickels
