Benedict cycled to his bakery with 16 trays of eggs. There were 24 eggs in each tray. He fell on his way and broke 1/3 of the eggs. He sold 5/8 of the good eggs and put the remaining eggs equally into 12 small baskets. How many eggs did he put into each basket?

There are 16*24 or 384 eggs.

1/3 of them (128 eggs) break. You are left with 384-128 or 256 eggs.

5/8 are sold, 3/8 remain. 3/8*256 is 96.

Lastly, split the 96 remaining eggs into 12 baskets. 96 ÷ 12 = 8.

The answer is 8

Beyond the math, I’ll offer some sage advice to Benedict:

Never Put All Your Eggs, Benedict, Into One Basket...

16 trays with 24 eggs in each tray

                   total 16 * 24 eggs.

he fell and broke 1/3 of eggs.

                               broken eggs = 1/3 * 16 * 24

                                  good eggs = 2/3 * 16 * 24

    he sold 5/8 of good eggs.

                             sold = 5/8 * 2/3 * 16 * 24

                             remaining = 3/8 * 2/3 * 16 * 24

    he put remaining equally in 12 basket

             in one basket he put

                  = 1/12 * 3/8 * 2/3 * 162 * 242

                  = 2 * 2 * 2

                  = 8 eggs in one basket
