Plumber P charges $45 an hour. Plumber Q charges $30 to visit your home plus $30 an hour. For how many hours will the total cost for each plumber be the same? How much will that cost be? If a customer thinks they need a plumber for 5 hours, which plumber should be hired?

3 hrs; $90
plumber P is cheaper for more than 3 hrs

2 hrs; $60
plumber P is cheaper for more than 2 hrs

3 hrs; $60
plumber Q is cheaper for more than 3 hrs

2 hrs; $90
plumber Q is cheaper for more than 2 hrs

Let H=number of hours when they will be the same

45H=30H+30

15H=30 divide both sides by 15

H=2 hours-when they will be the same

2 X 45=2 X 30 +30=$90 the cost of plumbers for 2 hours.

5 X $45=$225.00 the cost of plumber P for 5 hours

5 X $30 + $30=$180 the cost of plumber Q for 5 hours.

Any time over 2 hours, Plumber Q will be cheaper.
