The greatest average speed for a race car in the Daytona 500 is 286 km/h, which was achieved in 1980. Suppose a race car moving at this speed is in second place, being 0.750 km behind a car that is moving at a speed of 252 km/h. How long will it take the second-place car to catch up to the first-place car?

286km/hr =  286 x  1 hr / 3600sec = about .0794  km/sec

252 km/hr  =  252 x 1 hr / 3600sec  = about .0625 km/s

So......the faster car moves at about   .0794 - ..0625  = 0.0169 km /sec faster  than the slower one

Then...it will take the faster car    0.750 km /  0.0169 km /sec = about 44.38 seconds to catch the slower car

CPhill: I think you made a slight error in your calculations:

The speed of the 2nd car is =252/3,600 =0.07 Km/sec. Therefore the difference is:

0.0794 - 0.07 =0.0094 Km/sec.

0.75/0.0094 =~80 seconds for the faster car to catch up.
