Frank bought supplies for school. In the first store, he spent half of his money plus $10. In the second store, he spent half of what he had left, plus $10. In the third store, he spent 80% of what he had left. He came home with $5. How much did he start out with?

Let the total that he started with = T

In the  first store he spends   T/2 + 10

What he has left =   T - (T/2 + 10)  =  T/2 -10

In the second store he spends   (1/2) (T/2 -10) + 10  =  T/4  + 5

What he has left  =  (T/2 - 10) - ( T/4 + 5)  = T/4 -15

In the third store he spends    (.80) (T/4  -15) =  (4/5)(T/4 - 15) = T/5 -12

What the has left  =  (T/4 -15) - (T/5 -12)  =  T/20 -3

And what he has left = $5

So

T/20 - 3 = 5

T/20  = 8

T = 20 *8  = $160  =  what he started with
