 Would I be wrong if I started with (x-5)^2 =(x-8)

Angles A and C are supplementary, or add up to 180 degrees:

(x - 5) + (x + 5) = 180

2x = 180        divide both sides by 2

x = 90 degrees.

Angle D = 90 - 8 =82 degrees.

Angle B = 180 - 82 = 98 degrees.
