A pleasure boat traveling down the Red River takes the same time to go 14 miles upstream as it takes to go 16 miles downstream. if the current of the river is 2 miles per hour, find the speed of the boat in still water.

rate x time = distance

b = boat    c = current

(b-c)t  = 14

 (b+c)t = 16           t is the same in both equations.    and c = 2 m/h

                      add these two equations

2 bt = 30

bt = 15      sub this into one of the equations

15 - ct = 14    (c=2)

-2t = -1

 t = 1/2

(b+2)(1/2) = 16

b = 30 m/hr
