To be on the 1-km race team, Celia must have a mean less than 5 min 50 s in 6 tryout races. Her times in 5 races are: 6 min 2 s, 5 min 53 s, 5 min 45 s, 6 min, and 5 min 34 s. What time should Celia aim for in her sixth race to make the team?

Time that Celia has to aim for in the 6th tryout race: _____________________________________________________________
Is this possible? Explain.

5 min 50s =  350                 total seconds for 6 races = 2100 seconds

2100 - 362 - 353- 345-360-334 = .......   seconds for last race to qualify

   sorry....that would make the mean EXACTLY 5 min 50 sec....you'll need to subtract ONE more second from the 2100 to get the answer...

Add  all the known times together

6 +  5  + 5 + 6 + 5  =  27 min

2 + 53 + 45 + 0 + 34  =  134 s  =   2 min 14 s

So......the total of her times  =  29 min 14s

34 s =  14/60  ≈  .23 min

So....her total times so far ≈ 29.23  min

And note that 5 min 50 s   =   5 + 50/60   ≈  5.83 min

So  let  x  be  the time she needs (in minutes)   and we have that

29.23  +  x

___________  =    5.83                     multiply   both   sides by 6

       6

29.23  +  x  =34.98

x =  34.98  - 29.23  =    5.75 m

And  note that      5.75 m  =    5 + .75(60)  ≈   5m  +45s   =

 (5 min + 45 s)  = time she needs in her 6th race
