In a basket, 1/3 of the fruits were pears and the rest were oranges. If I give away 8 oranges, there will be 3/5 as many pears as oranges. How many oranges and pears were there in the basket altogether?

pears = 1/3 x     oranges = 2/3 x

  then give away 8 oranges  (this is   2/3 x - 8)

1/3 x =  3/5 ( 2/3 x - 8)

1/3 x  = 6/15 x - 24/5

1/15 x = 24/5

x = 72  original fruits
