Area, or surface area simply relates to the flat part of a shape e.g. a square with sides of 10cm will have an area of 10*10 = 100cm^2

Whereas a volume relates to a 3D object and the space inside of it, e.g. a cube with sides of 10cm will have a volume of 10*10*10 = 1000cm^3

Area is the amount of square distance between the boundary of a two-dimensional figure. Volume is 3d and is the amount of cubic area inside a 3d figure such as a cube of rectangular figure.
