how can i enter a mixed number into a scientific calculator? if i enter the mixed number, for example, 8 3/8 - 2 5/8 i dont want it to look like 83/8 to look like eighty-three over eight.

Let's not worry about the calculator....let's try this, instead

 

[8 + 3/8] - [2 +5/8] =

 

8 - 2 + 3/8  - 5/8  =

 

6 - 2/8  =

 

6 - 1/4  =    "borrow" a whole number,  1  = 4/4

 

5 + 4/4 - 1/4  =

 

5 + 3/4

 

And that's it  !!!
