First of all expand the bracket by multiplying what is inside by 5:

5(x+4)+3=18
5x+20+3=18      (5*x=5x and 5*4=20)

Then we collect all of the multiples of x on one side and all of the normal numbers on the other:

5x+20+3=18

5x+23=18      (add the 20 and 3)
5x=18-23       (subtract 23 from both sides)

5x= -5

Now that it is in this layout we divide both sides by five to give:

x= -1

Hope that helps!
