It just is the distance a number is from zero on a number line.

So pretend we had a number for example |5| it would just be five no doubt about it now if you had for example |4*5| then it would be 4*5 but it would equal 20 cause that is what goes into 4*5 any questions at all contact me alright

It just represents the distance that a particular number is from 0 on the number line.

For instance, l -3 l = 3, because -3 is 3 units from 0 on the number line.

And since distance is never negative, the absolute value of something is non-negative.

One use is to determine the distance between a positive and negative number on the number line.

For example, the distance between 10 and -7 on the number line can be represented by

l 10 l + l -7 l =

10 + 7  =

17
