When you have different signs (Positive and negative, for example) Start by subtracting the bigger number from the smaller number:

    11.0

  -   3.5                      ***Notice I made a decimal for 11, and I lined the decimals up.

This gives us 7.5.  Our answer will always keep the sign of the bigger number. Our bigger number was negative, so our answer is -7.5

That's how I set it up. This is my work:

11.0

- 3.5

___________

I crossed out both 1's in 11. The first one I crossed out and was left with 0. The second one was turned into a 9. The zero was turned into a 10 and I subtacted 5 from that and got 5. Then I subtracted the 9 from the 3 and got 6. My answer is -6.5. Please help me.
