You usually try to clear the surd from the denominator by multiplying numerator and denominator by that surd. 

 

For example:

 

$$\frac{1}{\sqrt3}=\frac{\sqrt3}{\sqrt3 \times \sqrt3} = \frac{\sqrt3}{3}$$
