how do you do it

x = y + 8

x  = y*3

Set the x's equal

y*3  = y + 8   simplify

3y   =  y  +  8      subtract y from  both sides

2y  = 8            divide both sides  by  2

y =  4

And

x  = y +  8

x   = 4  +  8

x  =  12
