how do you do tan^-n where n>1?

I don't understand what the problem is? Just take the tan as usual except you will get a negative value, e.g., tan(-30)=-.57735.

Put the argument in brackets and then raise to the power  tan(x)^(-2)  

That's if you want 1/tan(x)^2.
