How do you solve the following?  

The area of a triangle is 24cm the height is 2 cm less than the base what are the base and the height

Using Calculus

 

Area= (Base*Height)/2

 

Constraint formula     Height=Base-2

 

fill into first area formula

24=(Base*(Base-2))/2

48=(Base2-2Base)

Base2-2base-48

 

then foil

(base+6)(base-8)    base cannot equal -6

so the base is 8 and the hieght is 6
