The really basic calculator doesn't accommodate mixed numbers directly. So if you wanted to do

$$\mathrm{2\frac{1}{7}\ times\ 60}$$ 

on a calculator without brackets you'd need to go 

1 / 7 = + 2 = x 60 =

 

So you're evaluating 2 plus one-seventh as a little arithmetic exercise itself, to convert to its decimal value.
