How it can be 2(-3) = 6?
Hi!
I use my calculator and it gives me =-6, but it my math book it is =6.
Could I have an explanation for this?
why dont u ask ur maths teacher about this ! it can also be like 2*(-3) so when the bracket opens then the -3 becomes 3 thats why the answer is comin 6 in ur textbook !and zegroes is right , u should check the rest of the question , i think u just clearing the doubt of a paticular part but write the whole question then u can get much nice help !
I think your math book might have made a mistake. 2 * (-3) = -6
Because
positive*positive = positive
negative*positive = negative
positive*negative = negative
negative*negative = positive
Maybe if there's more to the question than 2*(-3) you should check the rest of the question

Think about this pattern
Notice that, on each new line, the number 2 is multiplied by goes down by 1 and the answer goes down by 2.
2*3=6
2*2=4
2*1=2
2*0=0
2*-1=-2
2*-2=-4
2*-3=-6
Can you see the pattern?
yes melody i can see the pattern ! what u r saying is really happening in it ! but the 1st three have been arranged in descending order thats why its looking like that but if are to reach zero u probably have to use this way ! so thats a good pattern but i cant get what r u trying to tell us that answers the question through this !
It is not just the first 3 that are in descending order Rosala it is all of them.
Here is a number line - maybe if you think about it you might understand what I am trying to say.
I am just showing how the pattern backs up the idea that a positive multiplied by a negative gives a negative answer.
