First.....convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions

 

1 + 1/4   =   5/4      (1)

4 + 1/2  =   9/2       (2)

 

The number of panels =  (2) / (1)   =   (9/2) / (5/4)  =  (9/2) * ( 4/5)  =  36/10  = 3.6 panels

 

However.....the whole number of panels  = 3
