In countries utilizing the "long scale," (Great Britain, most of continental Europe and Latin America) it has 18.

In countries utilizing the "short scale," (U.S. and Arabic-speaking countries) it has 12.

This is just another reason why huge and tiny numbers are so much better presented in scientific notation!

My experience is that the scientific community in the UK adopted the US approach to billions and trillions a long time ago!
