Jack and Paul shared the total cost of a present for their father. Jack paid $48 more than 2/11 of the cost of the present. The ratio of the amount paid by Jack to the amount paid by Paul was 1:3. How much more did Paul pay for the present than Jack?

x = price

Jack paid    48 + 2/11x

  Paul paid 3 times as much

48 + 2/11 x   +  3 (48 + 2/11 x)  = x

192 = 3/11 x

x = 704

So jack paid   176     <====== you can finish ~!

1 + 3 = 4

48 * 4 = 192

Additonal money paid by Paul = 192 + (48*2)

                                                 = $288
