Most common ways are:

Crossing out similar terms: Ex. 5x^2/x^2...the x^2's can be crossed out leaving us with 5.

Collecting like terms: Ex. 4x + 9x + 5 --> 13x + 5.

Distributing and then collecting like terms: Ex. 4(x+1) + x --> 4x + 4 + x --> 5x + 4.

Exponents: Ex. 5x^-2 --> 5/x^2.
