A right triangle has a base of 3x-5 and a height of 2x-4. Its perimeter is x2+5x+11. What is the length of the hypotenuse?
3x - 5 2x - 4 x^2 + 5x + 11
Note that.... if we subtract the base and height from the perimeter, what remains is the hypotenuse
So....adding the base and height we get 7x - 9
And subtracting this from the perimeter, we have
[ x^2 + 5x + 11] - [ 7x - 9 ] =
x^2 - 2x + 20 = the hypotenuse
