The question is not how... but why...? Is it because your instructor told you to or because you persue the limitless possibilities and applicatons of math?  Though what about those who created the fundementals of the math we do today? They never had instructors or any kind of instruction of where to start, it was the drve to discover and provide the countless textiles of knowledge and culture within these fundementals.
