A new planet in orbit about the Sun has a semi-major axis of 1.68 AU and an eccentricity of 0.0938. What is the perihelion distance of the new planet in AU?

If we discover a new planet in our solar system with a period of 14900.0 years, how far is the planet from the Sun in AU?

A star with the same mass of the sun has a newly discovered planet whose semi-major axis of 2.31 AU and an eccentricity of 0.078. What is the aphelion distance (in AU) of the new planet?

First one:

Semi-major axis   1.68 AU

a = 1.68

rmin = a (1-e)

       = 1.68 ( 1 - .0938) = 1.52 AU   (perihelion)

Kepler's Third Law

P2 = a3

149002 = a3

a= 2810.55 AU

rmax = a(1+e)       a = 2.31 AU     e .078           (  rmax  is aphelion )
