2x + 6y = 34 divide through by 2 ⇒ x + 3y = 17 ⇒ x = 17 - 3y (2)

4 ( 17 - 3y) + 3y = 23
68 - 12y + 3y = 23
68 - 9y = 23
9y = 68 -23
9 y = 45
y = 45/9 = 5 (dollars ) = cost of chicken nuggets meal
