2 cakes and 3 pies cost $56. The cost of 1 pie is half the cost of 1 cake. What is the cost of a cake?
p = cost of pie
c = cost of cake
2p = c (1)
2c + 3p = 56 (2)
Substitute c for 2p:
4p + 3p = 56
Solve for p, and subsitute it with the first equation.
Let cost of 1 pie be 'x'
So, cost of 1 cake = 2x
So, 2 cake + 3 pie = $56
2 (2x) + 3 (x) = 56
4x + 3x = 56
7x = 56
x = 8
Cost of cake = 2x = 2 * 0
= $16
