I do not understand how to solve this. Ill show my work as to what I did. if you could explain what went wrong that would be of great help the problem is x+square root(37-9x)=5 so i moved the x to the right and squared both sides and then combined both to one side to do the quadratic formula I got xsquared+19x-12 which I then put into the quadratic formula to get my final answers as 19+squareroot(409) and 19-squareroot(409)

Solve for x:
sqrt(37-9 x)+x = 5

Subtract x from both sides:
sqrt(37-9 x) = 5-x

Raise both sides to the power of two:
37-9 x = (5-x)^2

Expand out terms of the right hand side:
37-9 x = x^2-10 x+25

Subtract x^2-10 x+25 from both sides:
-x^2+x+12 = 0

The left hand side factors into a product with three terms:
-(x-4) (x+3) = 0

Multiply both sides by -1:
(x-4) (x+3) = 0

Split into two equations:
x-4 = 0 or x+3 = 0

Add 4 to both sides:
x = 4 or x+3 = 0

Subtract 3 from both sides:
Answer: |x = 4                      or                   x = -3

ah, thank you. I see what I did. I miswrote the -10x as a 10x which then caused me to end up with a 19x rather than a -(1)x.
