I think that this is what you mean

^ is used for "to the power of"    :)

8x^4-4x^3-x+2-2x^4-8x^2-x+10

Now I am going to open up the [LaTex Formula] box that is in the ribbon above and just copy  this straight into the insertion box.

I then collected the 'like terms' and here is my answer :)

$$\\8x^4-4x^3-x+2-2x^4-8x^2-x+10\\\\ =8x^4-2x^4\;\;-4x^3\;\;-8x^2\;\;-x-x\;\;+2+10\\\\ =6x^4\;\;-4x^3\;\;-8x^2\;\;-2x\;\;+12\\\\$$

You do realize you can use the symbols on your keyboard, don't you???
