The larger of two consecutive odd integers is three times the smaller. What is their sum?
:)
Any even number can be represented by 2x where x is any integer
So any odd number could be represented by 2x-1 or 2x+1
2x-1 and 2x+1 are consectutive odd numbers
There are lots of other pairs that could be used eg 2x+5 and 2x+7 but the first pair is likely to be the easiest to use.
so
You are told,
2x+1 = 3(2x-1)
so solve this equation, find x, then find the two numbers and add them together.
OR
you could just do it by trial and error - it is easy.
