volume of pyramid   =   (1/3) * (area of base) * (height)

The base of this pyramid is a 10 in by 10 in square.

area of base   =   10 in  *  10 in   =   100 in2

To find the height, let's look at this triangle:

By the Pythagorean theorem,

h2 + (5 in)2   =   (13 in)2

h2   =   (13 in)2  -  (5 in)2

h2   =   169 in2  -  25 in2

h2   =   144 in2

h   =   12 in

So the height of the pyramid is  12 in.

Now we can find the volume of the pyramid.

volume of pyramid   =   (1/3) * (area of base) * (height)

volume of pyramid   =   (1/3) * ( 100 in2 ) * ( 12 in )

volume of pyramid   =   400 in3
