GO is the full length      16 is 1/2  of the full length

sooooo    1/2 (x^2 - 14) = 16

Solve for x:
1/2 (x^2 - 14 x) = 16

Multiply both sides by 2:
x^2 - 14 x = 32

Add 49 to both sides:
x^2 - 14 x + 49 = 81

Write the left hand side as a square:
(x - 7)^2 = 81

Take the square root of both sides:
x - 7 = 9 or x - 7 = -9

Add 7 to both sides:
x = 16 or x - 7 = -9

Add 7 to both sides:

 x = 16                    or          x = -2 [Throw this one out]
