An airplane flying headwind travels the 1620 mile flying distance between two cities in 3 hours. One the return flight, the distance is traveled in 2 hours and 30 minutes. Find the air speed of the plane and the speed of the wind, assuming that both remain constant.

Let the plane = p miles/hour

and wind speed = w miles/hour

It takes more time to get there than to get back so on the way there the wind is causing the speed to decrease, and vise verse on the way back

So

p-w = 1620/3       and     p+w=1620/2.5

now solve simultaneously.
