Solve for x:
x^2 - 5 x - 8 = 0

Add 8 to both sides:
x^2 - 5 x = 8

Add 25/4 to both sides:
x^2 - 5 x + 25/4 = 57/4

Write the left hand side as a square:
(x - 5/2)^2 = 57/4

Take the square root of both sides:
x - 5/2 = sqrt(57)/2 or x - 5/2 = -sqrt(57)/2

Add 5/2 to both sides:
x = 5/2 + sqrt(57)/2 or x - 5/2 = -sqrt(57)/2

Add 5/2 to both sides:

 x = 5/2 + sqrt(57)/2       or          x = 5/2 - sqrt(57)/2
