I'm not sure where the absolute value bars belong ...

If the first problem is |-23 + 8x| - 12 > 37

then, first add 12 to both sides to get: |-23 + 8x| > 49

Since it is a greater than ('>') problem, split the problem into two parts:

either + (-23 + 8x) > 49 or - (-23 + 8x) > 49

Solve each one separately:

+ (-23 + 8x) > 49 - (-23 + 8x) > 49

-23 + 8x > 49 23 - 8x > 49

8x > 72 -8x > 26

x > 9 x < -13/4

Does this help? Any questions?

Here how to do the first one.

-23+8x-12>+37

make it simple

8x-35>37

add 35 to both sides

8x>72

Then divide bothe sides by 8

x > 9

I guess it is both because the first answer **and** the second answer is true, but only one **or** the other is true at the same time.

IDK one of the mods can answer better.
