If you start by asking what the square root of something is you can work your way back to find the answer.

Let the present age of the daughter =D

Her father's age =50 - D

 

2(D + 8) = (50 - D + 8), solve for D

D = 14 The daughter present age.

50 - 14 = 36 The father's age now, so that:

36 + 8 = 14 + 8

44  and  22 - In 8 years the father will be twice as old as his daughter.
