Explain how vertical asymptotes relate to the domain of a rational function?

A vertical asymptote means that a function is not defined at that x value

 

So....for instance.....if we have a rational function with vertical asymptotes of x = -2   and x =3....the domain is

 

(-inf, -2) u ( -2, 3)  U ( 3, infinity )
