Two office towers are directly across the street from each other. The smaller tower is 40 m tall. The angle of elevation from the top of the smaller tower to the top of the larger tower is 21o. The angle of depression from the top of the smaller tower to the base of the larger tower is 27o. Determine the height of the larger office tower to the nearest tenth of a metre.

Draw a picture to help visualize this:

 

Find out how far apart they are     tan 27 = 40/d      d = 78.5 m

 

Then the height above the 40 m building   is  tan21 = height /78.5    

             height above 40 m   = 30.133 m

                      and add the 40 m height to this = ~~ 70.1 m
