It’s a little known fact that King George III was so pissed about America’s declaration of independence on July 4 that he decreed a ban of the date’s use in 1777. The date was to be referred to as the date after July 3, or the date before July 5. This remained in effect until 1821.

The decree wasn’t widely followed, but there are a few documents using this date reference in that era.
