An ice cream company is changing the design of its ice cream from a cone to a cylindrical top to a cone with a hemispherical top. Initially, the cone has a height of 7 centimeters and a radius of 2 centimeters. The height of the cylinder is 2 centimeters. After the change, the new shape still has the same measurements the only difference is the shape of the top. In both cases, the cone is completely filled with ice cream. The company wants to find out which design uses less ice cream and how much ice cream is saved?
The only difference is the volume of a cylinder with a radius and height of 2 cm and the volume of a hemisphere with a radius of 2cm
It obvious that the cylinder will have a greater volume than the hemisphere.........and this difference is
pi (2)^2 * 2 - (4/6)pi (2)^3 = pi [ 8 - 16/3] = 8pi/3 cubic cm
So...the hemisphere uses [8pi/3] cm^3 less ice cream
