if -8 times -8 is 64 then why is -8 squared -64?,

BOTH OF THEM ARE EXACTLY THE SAME!.

-8 squared is NOT -64 but should be 64

(-8)^2 = 64

-(8^2) = - 64

 

Since raising to a power is generally taken to be of higher priority than negation, the expression -8^2 is interpreted as -(8^2) by most pieces of technical software.  Hence -8^2 = -64.
