(-3)^4  + (-8)  will follow the order of operations.   (-3)^4 comes first (exponents before adding).    Also, (-3)^4 = (-3)(-3)(-3)(-3) = 81.   (Because 4 negatives multiply to a positive and 3x3x3x3=81.)

So, that gives you 81 + (-8).  This is 73.  The opposite signs say to subtract, and you keep the sign of the bigger number (81 was positive).
