cos theta  =  ±√  ( 1 - sin^2 theta)  = 

 

±√  ( 1 - (15/17)^2 ) 

 

±√ (289 - 225) / 17  =

 

±√64 / 17   =

 

± 8/17          the sign depends upon the quadrant where "theta" lies
