Just substitute in the values for x and y then you have an equation for a:

           8 - a = sqrt(-2(-8+a))

a^2 -16a+64=-2(a-8)

a^2 -14a+48=0

     (a-6)(a-8)=0 Therefore a = 6 or a = 8
