If the price of a gallon of gas increases from $3.20 to $3.68, what percent did it increase?
Great answer reinout. I would have done it a bit differently.
$${\mathtt{3.68}}{\mathtt{\,-\,}}{\mathtt{3.2}} = {\frac{{\mathtt{12}}}{{\mathtt{25}}}} = {\mathtt{0.48}}$$
So the increase is $0.48
I think the perscent increase is $${\frac{{\mathtt{0.48}}}{{\mathtt{3.2}}}}{\mathtt{\,\times\,}}{\mathtt{100}} = {\mathtt{15}}$$$$\%$$
It increased by 15%
There you go sometimes you can get the same correct answer in 2 or more different ways!!!
Basically
3.68/3.20 = 1.15 and therefore the price has increased by 0.15*100 = 15%
I could try to give you a very detailed explanation, but I think this site will be able to describe it more accurately; http://www.mathsisfun.com/percentage.html
You could also look at the other sections on percentages at that page.
