If the length of one side of a cube is  x  then the area of that side is  x².

Since a cube has 6 sides, the total surface area is  6x².

If the total surface area is  48     --->     6x²  =  48

       Divide by 6:                                      x²  =  8

       Find the square root:                          x  =  √8
