8:20 - 12: 05 =    3hrs 45mins  = 3 + 45/60 hrs  = 3 + 3/4 hrs = 3.75 hrs

1:15  - 6:00  =   4 hrs 45 mins   = 4 + 45/60 hrs  = 4 + 3/4 hrs = 4.75 hrs

So .....  3.75 + 4.75   = 8.5 hrs
