first, let's add x to both sides to get:

2x - 5 + x < -12

3x - 5 < -12

 

now let's add 5 to both sides.

3x < -12 + 5

3x < -7

 

lastly, let's divide 3 from both sides.

x < -7/3

 

so, in interval notation, the answer would be:

 

(-inf, -7/3)
